Exercise Study

About our work

This project has now been completed.

This project tried to find out if exercise helped women feel better when they were receiving chemotherapy for early breast cancer. We wanted to find out if women were less tired. Also, iif there were any benefits after 6 months of taking part.

How did we carry out our work?

One group of women taking part in the study were given an exercise programme along with their usual care. The exercise was carried out over a 12 week period. It was supervised by Dr Anna Campbell. A second group of women took part in the study but did not have an exercise programme. The results from both groups were then compared. By comparing both groups we could see if the group of women who were exercising during treatment had less side effects and a better quality of life than the group of women who did not follow the exercise programme.

We also asked the group of women what they thought were the benefits and difficulties in exercising. We did this by holding small discussion groups.

182 women took part in the study over an 8-month period. These women attended the Glasgow Royal Infirmary of the Beatson Oncology Centre and were having treatment for early stage breast cancer.

Who did we work with?

Gaye Paterson, formerly of the CCRC worked on this project along with Dr Anna Campbell, Professor Nanette Mutrie, Profesor Nora Kearney, the Beatson Oncology Centre, the Roberston Centre for Biostatistics and Nursing and Midwifery School, University of Glasgow.
