Patient and Carer Experiences

The Cancer Care Research Centre completed a three year of a programme of work which focused on the experiences of people with cancer and their family members.

Phase 1: Information gathering (July 2004-Sep2005)

In the first year we established an understanding of patient and carer experience of cancer and cancer care in Scotland, the UK and beyond, using a wide range of methods.

Phase 2: Patient experience research (late 2005-March 2006)

We conducted a study of 66 people recently diagnosed with cancer. In a sequence of depth interviews, researchers learnt about their initial tests, treatments and then life after cancer. We focused on people diagnosed with breast cancer, prostate cancer, bowel cancer, gynaecological cancer and lung cancer. We also conducted interviews with health professionals, managers and policy makers to identify their views of patient involvement and utilising patient experience to inform practice.

The interim reports based on these interviews are now available online.

Phase 3: Enabling change (autumn 2006-spring 2007)

In the final phase, we used the information gained from phases 1 and 2 to support staff in creating change in cancer services. We worked with groups of patients, carers and key professionals in 3 lung cancer teams, to drive forward best practice in involving patients and carers in developing cancer service improvements.

Throughout this work the Centre has involved people affected by cancer in Advisory Groups to help guide the work. Click here to learn more about the advisory groups.

We evaluated the work of this programme through a series of methods, including a survey, interviews with key stakeholders and collated data in an impact file.
