Evaluation of Renfrew Cancer Information & Support Service (CISS)

We carried out an evaluation of Renfrew Cancer Information & Support Service (CISS), or the Renfrew Drop-in centre as it is commonly referred. This is a service developed in partnership between Macmillan Cancer Support, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and Renfrewshire Council.

Aim of Evaluation

  1. To examine the delivery of Renfrew Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Services and assess its meaningfulness and effectiveness from the perspective of people affected by cancer who use/d the service
  2. To examine the delivery of Renfrew Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Services and assess its meaningfulness and effectiveness from the perspective of health/social care and library staff from participating agencies in Renfrew
  3. To establish what works well and why from the perspective of service users and professionals
  4. To locate the findings in the context of the literature of cancer and cancer support groups
  5. To establish the uptake of Renfrew Macmillan Cancer Information and Support services in terms of type of contact, nature of contact, demographic details of contacts.

How did we carry out our work?

The study involved a researcher visiting the drop-in centre and observing the activities of drop-in centre users on a Tuesday and Thursday, semi-structured interviews with service users and professionals associated with the drop-in centre. Literature on cancer support groups and related areas such as the public role of libraries and the therapeutic environment was also reviewed.
