Dr Liz Forbat

I am a Reader in cancer and palliative care.  I co-direct the CCRC and lead the Families Children and Relationships research programme.

The programme is informed by my clinical training and theories from family and systemic psychotherapy. I am interested in the role that relationships play in the experience of illness.

We know that cancer occurs in a complex web of relationships; it affects not only the individual with the illness but their entire family. When cancer occurs in a family, roles and relationships, no matter what that particular family structure looks like, are affected.  This means the research moves beyond conceptualising people as ‘carers’ and ‘patients’ to a relational and systemic model of health.
