Director's Welcome

Picture of Prof. Nora Kearney, CCRC Director

Welcome to the Cancer Care Research Centre (CCRC). The Centre was established in October 2003 so that people affected by cancer could help shape the future of cancer services in Scotland. We work with people affected by cancer across Scotland from Stornoway to Dumfries and would like to hear from you if you would like to get involved. More information about how you can get involved with the CCRC can be found here. As well as working with people affected by cancer we also work closely with a range of cancer care professionals who work in partnership with us on our research projects.

The CCRC is the first of its kind in the UK as our research is informed directly by the views of people affected by cancer. Working jointly with people affected by cancer and cancer care professionals, we aim to improve future cancer services through linking scientific research with the reality of the experience of living with cancer and receiving cancer treatment. All of our research is directly linked to the actual experiences of people affected by cancer and we value highly the insights that individuals share with us. People affected by cancer work with us in a variety of ways including writing to us, helping with our website and information strategy, working with us in small groups and helping with our research projects.

The Centre has a team of 17 researchers and 7 support staff, 3 secondees and we are supported by a very active Steering Group, Patient Representative of the National Translational Cancer Research Network (NTRAC). Further information about the team and the Steering Group can be found here.

The Centre is a national resource for health professionals, the voluntary sector and members of the public who are interested in cancer care research. We have three main research programmes or areas and these are Symptom Improvement, Cancer as a Long Term Condition, Families and Children and Relationships . The team are working on a range of projects and you can find out more information about these here.

Our website will provide you with some information about what we are doing at the moment. The website is under constant development and we do this in partnership with people affected by cancer, if you have any ideas about how we could improve the website please get in touch.

With the help of people affected by cancer and cancer care clinicians we have developed our strategy for the next five years. This will guide the work we do but we would also like to hear from you if you think there is other research the Centre should be involved in. So please do give me a call, send a letter or contact us via the website, we would be delighted to hear from you.
